Market pricing. CME FedWatch for 28 Oct prices 57.6% for a hike to 4.00–4.25% versus 42.4% hold (up from 55.4% on Thursday). Further out, ~51% see 3.50–3.75% by the fourth meeting — the market prices a hike-then-cut path.

September SEP. GDP 2.3% (↑ from 2.2%), PCE 3.7% (↑ from 3.6%), core PCE 3.4% (↑ from 3.3%), unemployment 4.1% (↓ from 4.3%). 16 of 18 officials see at least one more hike this year; four penciled in two. Warsh again declined to submit his forecasts.

CPI (August, BLS). Headline +3.4% YoY / +0.4% MoM; core +2.4% YoY. Energy +16.3% YoY, gasoline +27.4%, airline fares +23.4%. Diesel at $6/gal. The Iran war is now the dominant inflation input.

Independence — a tradeable variable again. Trump publicly slammed the hike — "you might as well vote with the board" — and a Trump adviser questioned Warsh's leadership. Warsh holds the line: "inflation is too high", the hike a "responsible decision." With midterms ramping, the Fed-independence premium is repricing.

Implication. The Warsh put is OFF — a 5% 10Y alongside a hawkish dot plot compresses long-duration multiples, yet equities rallied anyway. That tension is the trade. JGB 10Y at 2.99% (30-year high zone) adds a yen-carry unwind as the top tail risk to the global AI/semi bid.

Policy. Bullock told a parliamentary committee on 18 September that inflation is "too high" and upside risks are "materialising" — the Board "must judge if rates are high enough." Capital Economics calls a September hike a "done deal." Market pricing moved from 17% to ~88% in eleven days.

Markets & consumers. The ASX 200 slipped −0.01% Friday and −0.1% on the week — a third consecutive weekly decline — though the A-VIX fell 18.4%, signalling no panic. The AU 10Y retreated from 2011 (15-year) highs. Consumer sentiment sank in September; inflation expectations remain elevated; private house approvals fell 4.2%.

Housing — deteriorating faster than 2022–23

Implication. A 29 September hike into a correction already outrunning 2022–23 is a direct negative for the Big-4 banks and consumer discretionary — and yet the index is holding flat on banks/miners rotation. That divergence is the tradeable signal.

Taiwan Strait Watch Elevated

Posture — volume down, quality up. PLA monthly sorties around Taiwan have declined since the start of 2026 (ISW, 1 Sep), but the coercion is shifting from quantity to sophistication: live-fire artillery, anti-submarine operations, port blockade and long-distance raids. Taiwan's own drills now include blockade-simulation for critical energy access.

Trigger indicators (90 days): (1) 1 October Mobilization Law implementation; (2) whether the sortie decline reverses on the Xi–Trump summit outcome; (3) any change to Taiwan's energy-resilience posture.

Risk level: ELEVATED — no imminent kinetic trigger, but a legal and doctrinal escalation is dated to 1 October.

Spread rule applies — read the physical markers, not the front spread. Brent–WTI at $3.57 sits below the $5 dislocation tripwire, which superficially reads as normalisation. Urals at $113.41 — roughly $9.5 above Brent versus its normal discount — proves the opposite. When the constraint is structural (sanctions, insurance, war-risk routing), the front spread compresses precisely because nothing is arbitrageable. Arbitrage broken, not healed.

Key driver (bullish supply repair). Saudi Arabia says half the 5M bpd East–West pipeline — the Hormuz bypass — is restored "within days," full in six weeks. Hormuz shuttle-vessel rerouting plus ship-to-ship transfers at Oman's Sohar port are up to 2.7M bpd from 1.5M in August. Reuters reports China pressed Iran to rein in the Houthis after a Riyadh appeal — the first visible Beijing mediation. Saudi crude production was 6,238k bpd in August versus 8,135k prior.

Brent above $100 — breached at $103.87. This feeds headline CPI/PCE with a ~2-month lag, keeping the 28 October FOMC a live hike meeting.

The real cost-push vectors

Iran War — Day 204

Status — kinetic at the chokepoint, diplomatic at the summit. On Friday 18 September two ships were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz (UKMTO). Trump said he has a "big decision coming up" on whether to "annihilate" Iran's ruling regime — while simultaneously saying the US is "talking" to the Houthis and that Iran "wants to make a deal." Trump signed the Lindsey Graham Russia–Iran sanctions bill into law, extending Iran sanctions to 2031; "Operation Economic Outcast" is expanding sanctions pressure and Hormuz traffic is falling sharply.

Trigger indicators (30 days): (1) Trump–GCC meeting Tuesday 22 September at UNGA — the week's highest-signal geopolitical event; (2) whether the Iranian UNGA delegation (visas granted 17 September) converts into direct talks; (3) any strike on Saudi/UAE export infrastructure.

Implication. Oil is pricing the physical repair (pipeline restoration, Sohar STS capacity) while the headlines keep re-injecting risk. Expect two-way volatility into the 22 September GCC meeting — and remember the peace-deal half-life has compressed from 10 days to 48 hours across this war.

Breadth warning — the rally is narrowing. Only 49% of S&P 500 constituents sit above their 200-day moving average (BTIG). Ed Yardeni cut his year-end S&P target to 7,900 from 8,400. Meanwhile gold at $4,383 is still refusing to confirm the stress regime — it is recovering from a one-month low while Brent trades above $100. The market is pricing a supply-specific oil shock, not a systemic risk event. That non-confirmation is itself the signal.

Portfolio Implications

What to Watch — Next 24–72 Hours

  1. Mon 21 Sep, 11:15 AEST — PBOC LPR fixing. Consensus is a hold at 3.00% / 3.50%, the first fixing since the Fed hike. A surprise cut would be a signal Beijing is moving to offset US tightening.
  2. Tue 22 Sep — Trump–GCC leaders at UNGA. The week's highest-signal geopolitical event. Watch for strike-announcement or last-chance-talks headlines; oil will trade the outcome either way.
  3. Thu 24 Sep — Xi–Trump White House summit. Tariffs, rare earths, Iran and Taiwan. CNBC: "the potential to be an important moment for the market." Barclays expects targeted, not broad, relief.
  4. Mon 21 Sep ASX open (10:00 AEST) — a third consecutive weekly decline is in play. Watch whether banks/miners rotation continues to cushion the index against ~88%-priced RBA tightening.
  5. Tue 29 Sep — RBA decision (~88% priced for a hike to 4.60%). Also on the runway: August PCE (Fed's preferred gauge) late September, Micron Q4 on 30 Sep, FOMC minutes 7 Oct.
