⚠️ The week’s central contradiction: the diplomatic and sanctions tracks are moving in opposite directions. Trump says he is “probably” open to meeting President Pezeshkian at UNGA and meets six Gulf states on 22 Sep; the Iranian delegation has visas. Yet Bessent is grounding every Iranian airline worldwide from Wednesday 23 Sep — “if they land, you cannot provide them with fuel, you cannot provide them with landing services, you cannot sell them tickets, or you will be knocked out of the dollar system.” Oil is trading the diplomatic track. Watch Wednesday.
- Status: escalation and de-escalation simultaneously. Kinetic events in the window: an LPG tanker struck by debris from an unidentified projectile off Hormuz with two crew wounded (UKMTO); the IRGC threatening new targets and weapons if the US strikes again; a reported (unconfirmed) Iranian claim to have downed a US drone over the Strait.
- Diplomacy: Trump addresses the UN General Assembly on 22 Sep and meets the Gulf Cooperation Council plus Venezuela’s Delcy Rodríguez. The reported Iranian condition is the lifting of the US blockade of Iranian ports. Trump has declined to bomb Yemen for now and rejected Saudi calls to strike the Houthis — a deliberate de-escalation signal that oil is pricing.
- Reconstruction angle (new): the administration has proposed a $5bn fund to rebuild war-damaged Middle East infrastructure — a signal that Washington is planning for a post-conflict phase.
- US posture: the “3 tankers for every ship shot at” doctrine stands; Cooper’s six-month-high flow read is the administration’s counter-narrative to Iran’s “the Strait is closed.” Both can be true: PortWatch counts AIS-broadcasting crossings only, and 63 of 205 screened tankers went AIS-dark.
- Trigger indicators (next 30 days): whether the airline grounding on 23 Sep provokes an Iranian naval or missile response; whether the 7-day reopening offer is confirmed or denied by Tehran; Hormuz mining; Houthi missile deployment on Perim Island; and any direct strike on Saudi/UAE export infrastructure.
- Implication: the peace-deal half-life rule (10d → 7d → 48h) still governs — assume any rally built on an announcement reverses on the first violation. The physical confirmation chain is tanker transits and insurance normalisation, never the headline.

★ The breadth tell (highest-signal new item): 30 S&P 500 constituents printed new 52-week lows against just 7 at new highs on a day the index rose >1% and closed within 1% of a high. Per SentimenTrader’s Jason Goepfert, the previous occurrences were 21 Dec 1999 (months before the dotcom top) and 23 Jul 1929. Leadership is narrow: comm services, IT and consumer discretionary carry the tape while everything else makes lows.

US futures (Tue pre-market, Dec contract): ES 7,835.50 +0.03% · NQ 30,806.25 +0.07% · YM 52,569 +0.18% — little changed after Monday’s record close. The futures series is on the December contract following the 18 Sep roll; direction is taken as “little changed” rather than a derived percentage.
Stress-barometer divergence: gold fell ~0.5% to ~$4,318–4,356 through a day of record equity closes and falling oil — it is not confirming a systemic event. The read remains a supply-specific oil shock, not a systemic risk repricing. Gold sits well below the January 2026 peak, and note the ATH citations disagree ($4,900–$5,600 zone) — report a range, never a single figure. VIX ~14.6 with Brent near $100 and a live shooting war is itself a complacency print.

✅ Sanity gate passed. Prior run A$119,785.13 → A$124,044 = +3.56%, and every per-position P&L reproduced to ~0.1pp against the prior briefing: MU +48.9%→+53.0%, MSFT +21.1%→+23.0%, META +10.5%→+23.0%, TSM +9.2%→+11.8%, RDDT −5.9%→−1.0%, AVGO −15.1%→−13.9%, CBRS −33.2%→−29.8%, QQQU −47.6%→−44.1%, TSXU −89.3%→−88.9%. AUD/USD 0.7119 → 0.7121 (FX effect ~nil). This is a new record high for the book (prior record 119,785 on 21 Sep). Recomputed from scratch twice — never anchored to a prior total.
- ★ Position P&L is now dominated by one name. META’s +11.4% session lifted that single holding by ~A$1,900 and added ~1.6pp to the US book on its own. MU remains the best performer at +53.0%. Together MU + MSFT + META + TSM = A$59,725 of the A$97,425 US value.
- Risk to watch — the breadth signal is a small-cap/leveraged-ETF problem. The book’s three deepest losers (CBRS −29.8%, QQQU −44.1%, TSXU −88.9%) are exactly the leveraged/small-cap-beta exposure that a narrow, mega-cap-led tape punishes. Monday’s +4.29% SOX and the +6.68% QQQU bounce do not repair TSXU’s −88.9%.
- Opportunity — oil down a fifth session is unambiguously good for this book. Lower crude relieves the CPI/PCE path, which is the direct input to the 28 Oct hike probability (57.6%). A confirmed Hormuz reopening would be the single largest positive catalyst available to a semis-heavy, rate-sensitive portfolio.
- Event risk concentrated in one week: Wed 30 Sep — Micron Q4 FY26 (after close), the largest single-stock risk in the book, on the same day as the August PCE print. MU is +53.0% and the book’s largest winner; that is where a surprise would hurt most.
- Rate sensitivity: with the 10Y at 4.967% and a hike 57.6% priced for 28 Oct, the Warsh-put-off regime keeps compressing multiples. Names with a large premium to cost (MU +53%, MSFT/META +23%) carry the most mark-to-market exposure to that repricing.
