Taiwan Strait Watch

Elevated

  • Posture: PLA drills continue to concentrate on joint blockade, quarantine and landing operations per Taiwan's MND 31 Aug report; Taiwan's Han Kuang exercise ran with US-learned drone/artillery integration. 19 PLA aircraft detected around the island on 17 Sep. No new incursion since.
  • Semis: Taiwan Weighted last printed 48,024.60 (24 Sep bar; Yahoo has not refreshed Monday). SOX closed +1.41% Friday at 12,668.93, but Korea's memory complex sold off hard Monday (see Markets) — the US-Asia semi link is misfiring again.
  • Trigger indicators (90 days): (1) the PLA's post-Han-Kuang exercise tempo into Q4; (2) any Chinese rare-earth/licence action layered onto the Jan-10-2027 tariff-truce deadline; (3) CXMT's NAND ramp as a share-shift threat to Micron's pricing.
  • Risk: Elevated but non-linear. TSMC >90% of leading-edge capacity remains the single point of failure — direct portfolio exposure via TSM (+14.9%).

Energy & Supply Chains

Brent
$108.05
+3.6%
WTI
$95.76
+3.6%
Brent–WTI
$12.29
Nat Gas
$3.11
  • Spread $12.29 — a dual-chokepoint blowout, not a tradeable arb. Corroborating markers: Urals $110.54 (a normally-discounted grade trading ~$6 above Brent's Friday level) and Midland/Murban physical cargoes well over $120. When the constraint is sanctions + war-risk routing, the front spread compresses because nothing is arbitrageable.
  • The real inflation engine is refined product, not crude. US diesel >$6.50/gal (record), diesel crack spread hit a record $108/bbl, and US distillate stocks sit at the lowest early-September level since 1982. Russia extended its diesel export ban to end-October. The White House ruled out a flat export ban (Energy Sec. Wright), removing a tail risk but leaving the crunch. Diesel feeds trucking, farming and food — the fastest route into headline CPI.
  • AI energy: the AI power constraint is now a credit event (Oracle's Project Jupiter force-majeure over grid power), linking AI capex to both the Treasury long end and AI-project credit.
  • Freight: containerized freight index +230% y/y — the logistics input cost is still climbing.

Portfolio Implications

  • Your book is ~100% supply-side AI leverage into an AI-pacing headline weekend. MU, AVGO, TSM, CBRS, TSXU and leveraged QQQU all sit on the capex-flow side of the split. NQ −1.0% pre-market implies a soft US open for that cluster.
  • The playbook says wait for the two-session tell. The Sep-14 Amodei shock was a narrative derating with no earnings or policy event behind it — it reversed inside 48h once counter-authority appeared and prediction-market odds on the trigger collapsed. Today the odds are 12% (was <20% on 16 Sep) and the derating is still one-sided. Treat today as a rotation, not a structural derating — and do not act until a second session confirms.
  • The real asymmetry is Wednesday. MU at $1,082 (+61%) into a ~$50B/+$31 EPS consensus with Citi at $1,300. This is a binary catalyst on a name that is 12.4% of the US book; a beat-without-guidance (the Samsung pattern) is the specific risk.
  • Rate exposure: a fully-priced RBA hike plus a 70% October Fed hike means there is no dovish safety net on either side of the Pacific. MU, META and MSFT all carry >25% premium to cost — the exact cohort that compresses first when the curve reprices up.
  • Hedge that is doing nothing: gold −3% to $4,154 leaves the book without a working war hedge. The uncorrelated winners this tape are energy, defence and cybersecurity — none of which you hold.

What to Watch — Next 24 Hours

  1. Tue 29 Sep, 2:30pm AEST — RBA decision. Hike to 4.60% is priced; the tradeable variable is the statement's forward guidance. Hawkish → AUD up, banks up, property down. Neutral/hold-all-options → "sell the fact" AUD.
  2. US open (00:30 AEST Tue) — does the AI-pacing drawdown follow through? Watch the semi complex (NVDA, MU, AVGO, TSM) vs cybersecurity (PANW, CRWD). Suppliers down + security up = the playbook intact and mean-reverting.
  3. Iran talks this week (Axios) and any Bab el-Mandeb headline. A second chokepoint would be a step-change for Brent.
  4. Wed 30 Sep — Micron Q4 + August PCE + ADP + Q2 GDP 3rd est. The single biggest two-way risk of the week.
  5. Fri 2 Oct — September nonfarm payrolls and the unemployment rate. With the Warsh put off, a hot print is a hike, not a hold-and-rally.
  6. ASX 200 at 10:00 AEST Tue: expect a flat-to-softer open on the Wall Street pre-market and oil bid, with banks supported into the RBA.

Method: Structured prices reconciled region-by-region (CNBC page header lagged a session; values arbitrated against yfinance bars). Brent taken from the Trading Economics benchmark ($108.05) — BZ=F $100.80 (−3.37%) is the November contract and a roll artefact, not a signal. Asia closes taken from yfinance over intraday wire prints (KOSPI closed 6,889.74, not the wired 6,916.30). Portfolio computed fresh: AUD_per_USD 1.42579.
